A wonderful vintage in the Seewinkel region with deep fruit and deep structure!
After a relatively mild and short winter, bud-break in spring was this year very early, April showed summerlike warm and flowering of the vines was this year unusually early finished by the end of May – everything led us think of an early vintage! Summer was similar to 2003 very hot and dry – many people enjoyed the Lake Neusiedl to swim – our vines on the other side suffered from the lasting heat and drought. Just the really deep rooting, old vines could endure this weather extremes without many damages – he small, thick-skinned berries stored much sugar and the ripeness of the grapes continued fast.
Already by the end of August we could start with the harvest of Grüner Veltliner and St. Laurent, shortly followed by Muskat Ottonel and our most important grape variety Zweigelt. Within a short period we were able to harvest most of our grapes, just our Blaufränkisch and some grapes for our sweet wines have been left in the vineyards. The first weekend in September brought then the long awaited rainfalls – unfortunately some weeks too late, but therefore all the more – within a few days we had more than 200mm of precipitation. The rootstocks as well as the grapes accepted the wet thankfully, but unfortunately the advance in the vegetation-period was gone. We had to wait for another week with harvest until we could bring in our Blaufränkisch without any further problems and with excellent quality. Still in September we could harvest a wonderful Trockenbeerenauslese from Scheurebe and our this years efforts have been awarded with an excellent Icewine from Grüner Veltliner on 5 January!
The new wines are well structured and convince with ripe, unbelievably deep fruit backed up by fine acidity. The white wines of the vintage, Grüner Veltliner and Muskat Ottonel, will be bottled soon and will be available by end of January 2008. They bristle with fresh fruit and exotic aromas and are both with some 12% of alcohol on the crispy and fruity side and are ideal partners for hot summer days. Our classic red wines are still in barrels and will be brought on the market by May/June. Look forward to some very elegant, fruity wines with nice spiciness and a fine acidity. The sweet wines of the vintage are real “bombs” and are still fermenting very slowly – they will be commercialised by May at the earliest.
