We are pleased about a great vintage in our region! The year was characterized by a mild and rainy spring and a very hot and dry summer. While in some regions of Austria the summer was humid and cold, the Seewinkel region was at its best - mature and totally sane grapes could be harvested in October. An Austrian classic matures in our cellars - the wines of the vintage are marked by a complex fruit together with a fine structure!
After a moderately cold but very humid winter, budbreak of the vines was at end of April. Chilled nights during spring caused a slow growth of the vines - in this period a strict vineyard managment was crucial - shoots which dropped behind have been removed consequently in order to allow continous developpment. Flowering started on 7 June and lasted, due to the cool weather, relatively long. The vines continued growth constantly although the unfavourable weather conditions and there was a lot to do in the vineyards! In July the weather finally changed. Sun came back in the Seewinkel-region and the growth of the vines speeded-up.
A marvellous September caused a good concentration of the berries and after some foggy days, we could start with the harvest of fully ripened and totally sane St. Laurent berries on 30 September followed by Zweigelt and Pinot noir. The harvest finshed on 20 October with Blaufränkisch for the ZANTHO Reserve.
The incredible pressure and tension calmed down and we are finally pleased about a classic vintage. The red wines show very deep fruit and the this years firstly harvested Grüner Veltliner shows again good fruit together with fine acidity. After the incredibly hot and powerful vintag 2003, an Austrian classic vintage which comes fully up to our expectations.
