Winter was this time not too frosty, but therefore quite long. Not until mid April we had some warmer days and bud-break of the vines slowly started
Regular rainfalls and lasting warm temperatures – a wonderful May brought much sunshine in the Seewinkel-region – let the vines continuously grow. Beginning of June flowering happened quickly without any troubles although the month showed from its “wet side”. July showed with moderate temperatures, in the long-term-average slightly too chilled. The first red grapes have been found already mid of the month – a sign that the growth of the vines will finish soon and sugar-concentration will start. End of July, the colouring of the grapes was finished with some delay and August showed with wonderful lasting sunshine – now our grapes could catch up the missing sunshine.
Already beginning of September, more precise on 3 of the month, our harvest works fully started. First we could bring in our new wine at ZANTHO – totally sane grapes of Sauvignon blanc with up to 18.5° KMW. Next our St. Laurent grapes came in very fast with very good gradations and excellent physiological ripeness. Our most important grape variety – Zweigelt - has been harvested with up to 20° KMW and after a short break our whites Muskat and Veltliner came in. The Muskat-grapes with their wonderfully fruity aroma have also been a great pleasure for our harvesters to graze. After two weeks of a break we finally harvested the last red grapes – our Blaufränkisch – which has profited a lot from the longer hanging period on the vines and gained much sugar. In the first week of October we could already finish our harvest and wait for the sweets. Already at the end of October we could harvest a wonderful Trockenbeerenauslese from Sämling/Scheurebe and our this year’s efforts have been rewarded with a perfect Icewine from Grüner Veltliner on 27 December, right before end of the year!
The wines of vintage 2008 are very fruity, perfectly balanced with deep spiciness at moderate alcohol levels!
