The wine with glass closure – guarantees quality, taste, and sustainability – Zantho is one of the first wineries worldwide to equip the entire wine range with the glass closure
Since 2006, almost the entire range of the winery has been equipped with the glass closure. Exceptions are the sparkling wines, the gin, and other bottle formats (small bottles, magnums, and larger formats). But why did we decide to take this innovative step at the time?
Previously, we sealed our wines with natural cork. More and more wines sealed with cork developed cork taint. Additionally, the wines simply aged too quickly and too much oxygen entered the wines. As a result, our Zantho wines lost freshness and fruit. The export quota of the company also continued to rise, and the longer transport routes meant that we needed a secure type of closure. The effects on wine quality due to longer transport can otherwise be quite negative.
We decided on the glass closure from the company Vinolok. The closure was novel and brought many advantages. Only minimal oxygen entered the bottle, and the wines remained fresh and fruity for much longer as a result. Tastings from our archive surprise us time and again. We are delighted by how long our wine with glass closure maintains its quality.
Thanks to the glass closure, the wine is protected as much as possible from external influences and undergoes its natural aging process. Another positive aspect is that the closures can be recycled. Our customers even practice upcycling. This means that our closures are also useful for other products and are frequently used—for example, as a closure for oils and vinegars. This fits into our philosophy of sustainability.

Sustainability, taste and quality
The wine with glass closure is certified sustainable
Our winery is “Sustainable Austria” certified. We want to act sustainably and are setting new standards in Andau. It is important to take responsibility together – for the climate, the environment, and also for us – the people. In this regard, not only ethical values play a major role, but also the work in the vineyard.
Through individual measures, we promote biodiversity in nature and focus on the economical use of our resources. We ensure fair working conditions, and our economic decisions are always made on a sustainable basis. By carrying the seal, we fulfill criteria in which our wines are produced and strictly tested according to economic, ecological, and social standards.
We invest continuously in traditional equipment such as wooden barrels, but are also open to new innovations to guarantee optimal quality. Thus, our wines are vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and then gently aged, in part, in oak barrels of various sizes and ages.
All our wines are produced with vegan certification, and our winery is awarded the International Food Standard (IFS). Thus, we can guarantee full traceability from the vine to the bottle. With the construction of the new ZANTHO winery building in 2020/21, we are setting a further example of sustainability, as the entire building is operated energy-autarkically and with maximum ecological energy efficiency by the powerful Andau sun.
