Our Blaufränkisch grapes grow in our vineyards in the wine region Neusiedlersee which is characterized by dry, gritty and mineral soils. The region counts to the warmest and dryest spots in Austria and gives therefore ideal conditions for the production of wonderfully distinctive red wines.

Zantho Blaufränkisch shows a deep red color with a violet rim. In the nose it shows incredibly fine fruit which remind us of blackberries together with a fine spiciness. On the palate the wine shows deep and spicy berry fruit which is backed up by fine acidity and shows a mineral finish.

Enjoy this wine with all kind of meat and mature cheeses.

The red grape variety Blaufränkisch is the most important grape variety in  Mittelburgenlandes (“central Burgenland”) and indigenous to the countries of ex-Habsburgian monarchy. Its origin is not 100% clear but it seems the grape variety derives from a crossing of Sbulzina und white Heunisch. Blaufränkisch itself is a crossing partner for new breedings like Zweigelt or Blauburger. In Germany the grape is known as Lemberger and in Hungary it is known as Kékfrankos.

In Austria the cultivated area adds up to 2.600ha which accounts to 6% of the whole vineyards.

Different to Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch demands perfect terroir and is sensitive during flowering.

A typical Blaufränkisch shows impressions of sour cherries and dark forest berries backed up by good acidity. It perfectly reflects the terroir it is grown in.
