The ZANTHO-Vintage 2014 **(*)

This vintage totally differs from the years before - an initially great vintage got diluted due to steady humidity. Only those who carried out a fierce quantity and quality management and who harvested before the big rainfalls in Autumn could harvest sane grapes.

Spring started mild and humid and the ground water level of Lake Neusiedl could recuperate. Budbreak was early in beginning of April and the growth of the vines was quick at chilled temperatures. Flowering of the vines beginning of June was a bit hesitant. Due to the chilled weather we had some colure which led to loose bunches. Summer heat did not really come up as sun did show relatively rarely but our vines still grew steadily. A clear advantage of our generally warmer climate in the Seewinkel region, one of the warmest spots of Austria, and the gravelly-warm soils which also lead in cooler vintages to good ripeness levels.

Pressure of fungal diseases was due to the steadily high humidity very high and therefore it was more than ever important to very strictly monitor the vineyards. Before main harvest it was this year necessary to cut out once more rigorously all damaged bunches - a quality measure that was time and cost consuming but was indispensable for high quality. Furthermore it was absolutely imperative this year to not wait too long with harvest due to rottenness.

Therefore we started harvesting with great strain already by 7 September with Sankt Laurent, Muskat and Sauvignon grapes followed by Veltliner, Zweigelt and Welschriesling and later on Blaufränkisch. By end of September all the harvest work was finished in time before the great rainfalls which started then and devastated most of the regions harvest.

First white of the vintage show surprisingly fruity with good acidity levels at moderate alcohol and are very promising. Reds of the vintage show fruity and charming at moderate alcohol levels and are vinified for earlier consumption. Due to the difficult vintage we did consequently decide to not produce any Sankt Laurent, nor Pinot Noir nor any sweet wines this year.
