The Blaufränkisch is a thoroughly central European variety. This pre-medieval variety is directly related to the Gouais Blanc grape, yet the second parent remains unknown

Blaufränkisch was previously widely-planted throughout the Habsburg Monachy, and is the most important variety in Mittelburgenland, called Blaufränkischland and Südburgenland and can be also  found in the Carnuntum region in Lower Austria.
