„Experience is precision work. They only work for the one person that gathers them.”
– Carlo Levi
The extraordinarily dry winter of 2002 let us wait until the end of March for sufficient rainfall. And it continued unusually: after a warm beginning of spring, winter returned at the start of April and was replaced by summer end of the month. Nevertheless, the bud burst occurred quite early and the warm and dry month of May had a growth-inducing effect on the vegetation. The blossoming period took place in perfect circumstances. A heat wave in June brought us 11 days of temperatures over 30°C and gave us a three-week vegetational head start. Mid of July the berries already started to change their colour. Mid of August we were finally rescued from the drought. The nights started to cool down and the aromas started to develop better inside of the berries. Harvest started on the 5th of September. Through the drought the berries stayed small and concentrated – the yield stayed low. After about two weeks the whole harvest was over.
